Workshop Three: Final Outcome

Inspirational Typography

Ross Crawford is an award-winning creative mastermind who comfortably straddles the visual disciplines of illustration, graphic design and typography, a diversity that has brought his talent to bear on numerous branding, fashion and advertising projects at home and abroad.

I thought I'd do something different with this design and do typography instead so I have a variety in my designs. I hand drew with a pencil the type of typography writing style I would like my design to have, then when over it with a black pen to make the lines clearer and make sure no colours ran when opened it up in Photoshop. As my artist I am promoting is Rhianna, I chose to use the lyrics of one of the new songs from her new album as I felt this would sell well amount my audience as it is fresh and new in the charts, promoting the sales of my phone case.
I used Photoshop I create my design and found an image of cartoon lips on google and opened it up into Photoshop; again sticking with the red theme of Rhianna. Then I opened up my drawn lyrics onto Photoshop and used the wand tool to cut out the words and place them onto design. Then used the place tool to rotate and centralise the write, ending by blending the two layers together and changing the colour of the text to black to stand out against the bright red in my design.

The main influence in all of my designs is Tim Marrs as he offers a quirky, fun and adventurous feel to all his design and I feel I have reiterated this in my designs. An area I feel I could have improved on is being more adventurous and thinking outside the box more with my typography design, perhaps placing the letters in a funky style and layout; maybe creating an image like the elephant design above to make it look more interesting and stand  out against other typography designs. I feel like my final outcome is successful because it clearly reflects my artists with lyrics and colours (red), fitting in with current trends and themes. Moreover since her new album "Anti" has just been released the sales of my case will be higher as it's fresh and popular amongst my target audience in the charts now, therefore benefits me as it's relevant.

Graphics

In todays lesson I drew rough illustrations that I could then use when I open them up in illustrator to make patterns. I drew them on with pencil A4 plain paper and created 6 rough hand drawn images that relate to Rhianna my chosen artists and music. I chose to do simple, abstract shapes so that it is easier to work with when I open them up in illustrator.

As you can see on Photoshop I have used the cut out tool to cut around my pencil drawing design and then turned it into a repeat pattern for the back of my phone case. I replicated my design using the colour wheel to make different colour version so my customers have a range of colours to chose from. Moreover on one of the phone case Rhianna I have placed Rhianna's face on the back to continue the Rhianna theme and make it look more interesting. To do this I copied and pasted an image of Rhianna from google onto my design and with the wand tool which brushed away any parts of the image in the background I didn't want on my design; zooming in to make it more precise. I then make it transparent to blend in with the background and used an effect to make it look more cartoon and urban to match the  Rhianna theme.

Rhianna Phone Case Inspired by Tim Marrs Design

Firstly I opened my image up onto Photoshop to a new file. I cropped the image to size using the cropping tool on Photoshop using only the part of the image I wanted. I ensured that the image was the correct size/ capacity to fit the file and once that was complete I locked the image so that if any errors were made in the process I always had my original background I could go back to if necessary withput any changes or edits on.
I then made a copy of the layer and this time experimented using the different editing filters and tools such as brightness, saturation, black and white etc. The most drastic tool I used to enhance my image was by using the contrasting tool, by having a higher contrast made the colours look more dramatic and stand out by making the black colours in the image darker and the whites brighter.

I created  a new layer for when I opened the next image; which was an image of Rhianna. I dragged the image to the size I wanted; keeping hold of the shift key whilst I  dragged the image, so that the size of it wasn't distorted and kept its shape so the image was in proportion and not stretched. I used a range of tools and filters to enhance the colours under the "adjustments" tab. I dragged the "opacity" and "fill" tools along the scale to find the best number so that the layers were blended together nicely.  I reduced the opacity and fill significantly to make the image more transparent so you could clearly see everything in the whole image including the background and the microphone. To complete the image and make it more blended I used the feather tool using faint brushes to gradually blend in the corners and lines in the picture to match the background. I changed the size of the feathering brush to give more subtle stroke and make the blending look more natural.

Used the erasing tool to get rid of "sdc" and screws to make the look more professional and less distracting more focus on other parts of the image (main subject Rhianna). Then played around with the bright//contrasting/ocaption and fill crop tool use of colour and fonts find out name for the cut out using the tool magic wand to cut round the microphone to get ride of the unnecessary background just keeping the microphone. In evaluation overall I stuck to a limited colour plate mainly using reds which stands pout against the black, and used editing tools to enhance the reds and make her red nails, hair and lips stand put. I thought this was effective because Rhianna is known for red and my case reflects this.

I used a selected colour of paints which I felt best suited the Rhianna/Tim Marrs theme and using different paint brush and sponge techniques created a variety of patterns and techniques which I could later incorporate into my phone case design as a background to give more textures and an urban, edgy feel to the design.

Took a picture of painting opened up in illustrator then blended it in with the image made it whole size of image. Then played around with colour effects of the paint design to see which one best matched Tim Marrs theme (who is my inspirational artist for my design).

Portsmouth Guildhall Exhibition Review

Portsmouth Guildhall Exhibition Review
The exhibition was about music performances in Portsmouth from famous bands and musicians from over the years. It was laid out in a time machine layout, walking through different rooms which were laid out in the style of the music of the time and who performed showing photographs, props and costumes from the performances which was exciting and interesting to see.

I would recommended people to visit the exhibition so they can find out a bit more music genes and bands and singers from different decades; showing  how music has developed over the years.Visitors are able to enjoy rooms that reflect on Portsmouth music and the history of the Guildhall, and how this all fits into a wider historical context. It gives people an insight into what life was like in the past not just music but fashion, money and advertising; showing a real comparison to how it is today. Moreover it gives you a taste of music from different decades which made it feel like you have experience it yourself which was a brilliant experience.

The highlights of the exhibition for me was the whole layout of the exhibition, and how it feels like we were traveling through time, like a journey showing the of fashion and style though time. I everything room there was something new and surprising you learnt something different keeping me intrigued and interested throughout the whole exhibition; there was never a dull moment! Another highlight was seeing all the iconic props from famous performances right in front of me. Furthermore I really enjoyed watching the video of a couple of different past performances from the guild hall from famous signers, it was fantastic because you got a real sense of the atmosphere that the performance must have been giving off.

Overall from attending the exhibition I have learnt a few things about music in Portsmouth, such ashe Guildhall was originally completed in 1890. It was designed by Leeds architect, William Hill, who was inspired to improve upon an almost-identical model that he had designed as Bolton Town Hall in 1873. I also found out how many famous bands and singers played at the Guildhall and how much tickets for contacts costed then "£2" compared to process now "£40".

The exhibition could help my graphics project by giving me inspiration from successful artist's work who's styles I could incorporate into my designs. By looking at the styles of posters and advertising materials and possibly get inspiration from the layout , styles of writing and fonts to make my work look more effective.

Graphics Production Terms

Knowledge of Production Terms
A4 paper is the size of 210mm by 297mm
The dimentions for A3 paper is  29.7cm X 42.0cm for a poster
In terms of printing a "bleed" is a term that refers to printing that goes beyond the edge of the sheet before trimming. In other words, the bleed is the area to be trimmed off.
When sending your illustrate files to the printer you should outline and embed fonts because the printer might not have the particular font you want.
When sending a file to the printers the colour setting should be CMYK. CMYK is a scheme for combining primary pigments. The C stands for cyan (aqua), M stands for magenta (pink) which darkens and deepens shadows, Y stands for yellow, which flattens an image making it look likes it on more of a grayer scale; opposite to magenta, and K stands for key tone.

The serif font a small decorative line added as embellishment to the basic form of a character. Typefaces are often described as being serif or sans serif(without serifs). The most common serif typeface is Times Roman.
A common sans serif typeface is Helvetica.
Helvetica was developed in 1957 by Max Miedinger at the Haas'sche Schriftgiessere of Münchenstein, Switzerland.
What does RGB stand for within design production? The RGB colour model is an additive color model in which red, green, and blue light are added together in various ways to reproduce a broad array of colours.
JPEG stand for Joint Photographic Experts Group. The JPG is probably the most common file format now in use for storing digital images, especially on the web. It is ideal for images that use more than 256 colours, such as digital photographs. When you save an image using this format, some of the data is lost because the file is compressed.
GIF- Graphics Interchange Format-File format for the web and can also form animations.
EPS- Context: Encapsulated PostScript: High resoultion file- when you want to hold a lot of data. . (You can't email them because the file is too big.)
In computers, dots per inch (dpi) is a measure of the sharpness (that is, the density of illuminated points) on a display screen . The dot pitch determines the absolute limit of the possible dots per inch.
The minimum resolution to scan artwork for print is 300 dpi.
When producing a vector based logo for as client illustrator is the program you would use.
Photoshop is the program you would use to improve the quality of an old and damaged photograph.
If you are producing an 8 page magazine for an assignment, Indesign is the program you'd use can because Indesign can handle are amount of date with lots of pages other programs would be much slower.
The starting salary for junior graphic designers is £19,000.
A creative designer can make £70,000 .
A Senior graphic Designer earns an average salary of £29,000 per year.

Logo Design

I have used photoshop to design a professional looking logo that I could use on photographs, business cards etc. Firstly I created a new document and set it too transparent so that it can be placed onto white backgrounds without showing up. I then created a text box and wrote my name changing the font type too look more sophisticated, and changed the colour too make to more identifiable as mine.  I then used a rectangle tool too make too thick lines about and below my name to help it stand out and look distinctive. To finish i saved it as a PNG file so that when printed the design comes out the right size. I decided to keep my design plain so that it can be used for multiple uses rather than keeping it limited for certain things.
